Anyone know what this plant is please???

  • Marcus 21 plants United Kingdom8a

Got this plant popping up all over the garden at the moment. It has very deep roots and the leaves sometimes have red patches on them. The sap in the stalk is a bit sticky.

It really is getting everywhere, it’s even appeared as a weed on the front step (growing out the concrete!)

Anyone got any ideas as to what it might be? We were thinking it could be some sort of horseraddish as we tried growing it last year to no avail but there is some of this plant around where we were trying to grow it. It certainly didn’t seem to grow in the garden last year so it a bit of a mystery to us.

    Many thanks in advance,

    Marcus

  • My immediate thought was docken; but it might be sorrel.

Had a look at Docken pictures and that looks more like what we’ve got than horseraddish. Blast, oh well. Digging session continues tomorrow.

    Thanks for the help AberdeenshireQuine

I did a search on Google & it couldn’t find ‘Docken’, the nearest plant it could come up with was ‘Dockweed’ often known down here, in the South, as ‘Dock’ & we use it to cure nettle stings. It grows quite a lot on our allotment & I’m forever digging it out!

The photos I found look similar to the ones you posted so probably the same plant.

Yes, quite confident this is Rumex obtusifolius – broad-leaved dock.

Aye the digging has begun in earnest now. Trouble is the roots really do go down a way making them a pain to get out without disturbing what is around them. Will be more vigilant next year in getting rid of it earlier on. But I suspect it will all just regrown where the roots are 8inches lower than I dug out.

    Cheers all.

  • You can use a systemic weedkiller, if you’re not doing organic. Round up or something like that.

if its growing out of the cracks in the concrete paths etc, you could try boiling the jug and then pouring the boiling water over them, works here with some plants, a good organic alternative to some weeds..

Before you formalise your declaration of war and start pouring vinegar or more potent chemicals all around your garden, do ponder for a moment that this isn’t an entirely useless plant:

Have a read of the various uses before you decide on categorising it as obnoxious weed or ultra-low maintenance herb!

Pretty much dug it out of the garden so I can’t see anymore of the plants. Chances of it being ‘eradicated’ I suspect are low. But at leas now I know what to look for in the young leaves so I can pop then out before they grow too big.
It’s a funny thing but I didn’t notice much of them in the garden last year but now it’s everywhere (even out the front of the house. Had plenty of nettles but not this plant.

And wow do it’s roots go deep! Got one out longer than my arm!
