oenothera lamarkiana (evening primrose?)

  • jets_fan 0 plants United States

Hi! I’m not a gardener. Two years ago I planted wildflower blend seeds. A year later a beautiful plant grew. Tall green stalks with prickly leaves. And beautiful yellow flowers that came out at night. It was fantastic. I think it’s oenothera lamarkiana. I cut it down when the cold weather came. Did I do the right thing? Will it come back this year?

    Thanks,

    Kathy

If your identification is correct, wild evening primrose is an annual. This means it grows each year from seed. The plant completes its growth cycle in one year; sprouting, flowering, spreading seed, and then dying. If the plant had a chance to spread seed before it was cut, you will most likely have new plants, as this is a prolific reseeder. If not, do not despair, for you now know the plant and that you like it and can pick up a packet or two of seed to sow yourself. It is terribly easy to plant and care for, just scatter seeds in the area you want plants and water occasionally. That is it.

When I was looking for information, I found several places that sell the seeds, and you can also check here to see if someone has some seed to swap. Just look on the Swaps tab above and follow the instructions. Some people may be happy to trade for postage or send you some seeds to get you started gardening too. It at least doesn’t hurt to ask.

I have a large amount of seeds that I collected from my plant last year. If you’d like some, send me a message!
