Every year the King County Conservation District sells bareroot native plants incredibly cheaply. Orders for this year are due January 31, which means they need to be mailed a few days earlier. See
http://www.kingcd.org/pro_native.htm

I have done this every year and mostly the plants have thrived.

"
Dear King Conservation District Plant Sale Pre-order Customer,

Here is some information you may find helpful so that your plant pick up goes smoothly.

2011 PLANT SALE PICK-UP INFORMATION

Thank you for your recent tree and shrub order. Plant orders will be available for pickup at:

King CD office parking lot 1107 SW Grady Way, Renton WA 98057

Friday March 4th from 9AM to 4PM and
Saturday March 5th from 9AM to 2PM

This is the same location as last year but not the same as 2008 and prior. See directions section below. If you cannot pick-up your trees or need additional help on those dates, please call Jacobus at (206) 890-8212 to make other arrangements.

Important Notice: Due to the fragile nature of bareroot plants, pre-orders not picked up on the specified dates will be donated to local non-profits for restoration projects on March 11th, 2010. There are no refunds for plant orders not picked up.

Didn’t order enough plants? We will be selling plants to the public at the same dates and place as the pre-order pick-up. Remember to tell your friends!

We hope your trees and shrubs thrive and serve you well in the years to come. The plants come from the Washington Association of Conservation Districts in Skagit County, as well as several private commercial nurseries. We strive to provide you with affordable, high quality bareroot trees and shrubs for all of your conservation needs.

Your plant order will come assembled and bundled and in bareroot form. This means no soil, no pots, and no burlap bag. They are kept cool, moist and will still be dormant but need to be handled carefully and planted fairly soon. A large plastic bag will generally be adequate to hold a large number of plants as they are bundled tightly (please help us by bring your own reused plastic bags.

You will not need a large capacity vehicle to transport your plants.

Tips: Remember to keep your plants cool and the roots moist until you can plant them in the ground or in pots. It is best to plant them as soon as possible since the spring weather will cause them to come out of dormancy. If you are unable to plant them right away, you should water and heal them into compost, soil, mulch. Once in the ground, your new plants will need some care for the first few years. Make sure to water them consistently, especially the first year and if it’s a dry summer. It is also important to keep invasive weeds and grasses from competing with the young plants until they become established.

Thanks again for your order and we will see you at the pick-up!
