Visit from the Not-a-Cat
-
As I was heading out to retrieve the dog from her final constitutional of the evening, I happened to glance out the window at the lighted dog run. My mind said “cat” at the same instant as my mouth said aloud, “what is that ?” The gray kitty turned on graceful little feet – pirouetted, in fact – and its black-tipped tail didn’t just follow the motion, it flowed. I thought it seemed awfully gosh-darned cheerful for a cat that was only a few feet away from a 70-lb dog, albeit with a chain link fence between them. As it finished its little dance maneuver it’s head ended up in three-quarters profile to me. What an interesting little…snout? Um, cats don’t have snouts, at least not last time I checked…
I’ve often seen red foxes in Minnesota, including one memorable twilight encounter with a gloriously winter-coated pair bouncing, pouncing, and rolling in a snowbank. This gray fox sighting was my first. My Collie was Not Amused.
Interesting tidbit – gray foxes can climb trees, supposedly the only canid other than the Chinese racoon dog who can do so. I’m guessing then that a 6-foot chain link fence would not be much of an obstacle, so turning that corner of the fenced area into a chicken yard doesn’t seem like that great of an idea anymore. I just hope the fox noticed our all-you-can-eat gopher buffet.
(And no, I didn’t take the picture, it’s from Wikipedia.)

Great observation there,
I know how you feel. I once had an encounter with a fox amongst sand dunes down on our coastline. I rounded this rather large dune just as a fox came running in the opposite direction chasing a rabbit.
I paused in mid-stride, Brer Fox froze (or so it seemed) and while we eye-balled each other the rabbit scrambled up the dune and out of sight. The fox turned on the spot and raced back around the dune, leaving me with mouth open in disbelief. If it hadn’t been for the disturbed sand I would have thought I imagined it.
On the matter of your chickens could you run a section of wire around the top of the fence on an outward angle? Works around here.

Oh, I’m sure that would work here too – lots of people around here have chickens and there are bound to be solutions. I’ve just had birds on the brain since several people have been posting adorable chicken pictures. My husband would probably spontaneously combust if I tried to get any more animals lol.

I’ve seen a fox in our yard a while back. Two summer ago, a lady living about 8 miles from me was attacked by a rabid fox. The fox was trying to pull her 10 week old puppy through the dog lot fence and Sharon walked up thinking it was another dog. She proceeded to hit the fox with a broom so it would release her puppy. In doing so, the fox jumped on her leg and did some pretty extensive damage. Her husband was able to kill the fox and both were taken to the ER. The fox was found to be positive for rabies, so Sharon had to take the series of painful shots. So, be careful and respecful around any wild animals.

I love the idea of an ‘all-you-can-eat gopher buffer’! -

Hi there! You're reading a conversation in the Wildlife in the Garden (Worldwide) group on Folia.
There are some lovely journal entries about the wildlife that shares our gardens with us which prompted me to create this group where we can share our garden wildlife with other MyFolia members.
