I have lived in this place only for a bit over year, so I have not had time to change the garden so much to my liking, but I brought some plants with me from the previous place and I have what I call “a kindergarten” for the small plants and seedlings. I used to have a greenhouse in the old place, and I’m missing it now. But luckily enough, I have some nice indoor spaces with windows to overwinter the less hardy plants. I grow mostly edible stuff, also quite exotic species. At the moment there are two grapefruit trees and a banana (Helen’s Hybrid) on the backyard in large pots. Planted in the ground are a few grape vines, pears, plums, apples, berry bushes etc. but also some strange trials like Diospyros virginiana, Asimina triloba, Castanea sativa and hybrid chestnut, Morus alba var. tatarica, none of which are supposed to grow in Finland… Indoors I have a variegated pineapple, coffee bush, pineapple guava, wampee fruit and others. I used to grow a lot of different chile pepper varieties in my greenhouse, but now that I don’t have that any more, I only grow a few pot pepper plants on a windowsill.
I also made a small kitchen garden to the backyard. I grow lettuce, squash and other vegetables in it. But I also rented a 200 square meter allotment from the municipality, and have now grown mainly potatoes, onions and carrots there this first year. I try to grow organically when possible, so I mostly use horse manure and compost as fertiliser and I also use companion plants and mulches, but I sometimes have to give in and use some chemicals since the pests and weeds are hard to fight completely without.
Currently I live in the suburb of a small town, but I long back to the country, where I lived for five happy years and where I can make a new greenhouse, grow more of my own food and live happily ever after.
