Judy's Edible Container garden

Garden Type: Container | Sun: Full Sun | Soil: Potting Mix I'm Organic!

Living in the tropics necessitates well-shaded gardens to reduce home cooling costs. As Darwin is a cyclone prone area, the most likely trees to survive from year to year are palm trees which have huge root bowls underground and minimal windage aboveground. Unfortunately this creates problems for edible gardens on a suburban lot – very little full-sun and root-free positions. I found the best solution to be container gardening. Some of the advantages are:

1. Can move the containers to the sunniest positions throughout the year

2. Can bring the containers indoors when a cyclone threatens (non-trellis ones, that is)

3. Avoid waterlogging that occurs during the wet season

4. Easier to use exclusion pest control methods

5. Can easily raise the containers to favourable working height, and out of the reach of pets.

I’ve been doing Earthbox/container gardening for about 5 years now, and I love it. The yield-to-space ratio is awesome, and I love having the flexibility to move things around. Looks like you have a great setup.

Thanks for the comment and the buddy add. Now I can follow your progress too. I’ve just been looking at your “Garden Re-Org” photos on flickr – your garden is thriving and looks absolutely gorgeous. The one thing that sometimes disappoints me about my garden is the fact that I have set it up with emphasis on practicality rather than aesthetics.
