Fall 2009 – This garden is a raised bed in my backyard at our house on 5th street in Port Angeles. Dad, Matt and I built the frame from spare wood that we got from Matt’s dad. I love that we didn’t have to buy anything and we used what resources we had on hand. The frame is 8 feet by 4 feet by 8 inches. I dug out the grass underneath using a pick and laid down cardboard to prevent weeds and to build the soil. Dad and I got 1/2 yard of topsoil that had sand, compost and other goodies in it from a place in town.
Spring 2010 – The 2nd bed (east bed) is also 4ft x 8ft. We bought the wood (Douglas fir) from a lumber place on C street, can’t remember what it’s called at the moment. Used brackets for the corners, much easier than using a short piece of wood like we did with the 1st bed. The 2nd bed is deeper, about 12" deep and required about 3/4 yard of the same garden soil that we used in the 1st bed. Again, I dug out the grass and am planning to compost it. I dug it out in the late winter when the soil was wet and this time around it was much easier to pick out.
April 2010 – Changed name to just “Backyard garden” because this garden has become more than just 2 raised beds. I have 4 garbage cans for potatoes, 1 Rubbermaid tote that used to be a wormbin for onions, a small bed next to the garage for culinary herbs, a sod pile for zucchini and possibly another small bed in the ground for whatever else I need. So…this garden has expanded beyond what I originally thought, but that is wonderful!
Located in Port Angeles, United States, jwolff's Backyard garden is an outdoor organic garden that currently contains 19 plants.
This is a Raised Bed garden that is known to be in USDA Hardiness Zone 8b. It has mainly Sand soil and receives Full Sun light.Photos
