The back of our lot is a mess of Black Locust, Honeysuckle, Poison Ivy, Bramble, Wild Raspberries, and a fallen male and healthy female Mulberry trees. This area is dense, uneven in ground, and continues to our lot line before the railroad tracks.
Plans are to eventually clear out many of the scrub trees. Clear away the poison ivy and honeysuckle. We are working to slowly fill the uneven areas of earth to create better soil and more land. We plan to eventually create a little shaded escape in this area. We will eventually replace trees too. The face of the line receives a fair amount of sun. This will change as the orchard grows.
Many birds reside in this tree line. We have a variety of bird houses tucked into the trees from wrens, to common houses, to a screech owl / saw-whet owl box (currently new and uninhabited). When facing away from our yard, this area overlooks the railway and a beautiful sloping corn field that is often full of deer and geese.
This area is admittedly more my dh’s project than mine. I hope to make some influence eventually by planting woodland flowers and edibles.
