When we moved in this section was covered in red wood chips about a foot deep. There was an old penstemon and a daisy. It was horrible. The wood chip was so compacted and old that it was dry as a bone underneath and the soil wasn’t even soil really. It was compacted dust really. So we added heaps of cow manure and chicken manure. Grew a bunch of sweet pea in and then dug them through and mulched it. Then started to plant in it. It is still pretty bad, but improving.
