We have a wooden fence and a large mature apple tree on the northern side of our backyard that were both here when we bought the house. The area is dark and cool and tends to be a bit of a mosquito haven. The grass doesn’t really do that well under there anyway, so I want to eventually turn it into an edible forest garden/bird garden to provide fruit, flowers, and seeds for both us and the birds.
Soil is complete shite. Horrible heavy clay (dark) for the first 2-4 inches, then horrible subsoil below. Hoping that mulching and adding more deep rooted plants will break up and enrich the soil a bit.
