kerryg's Rain garden

Garden Type: Flower | Sun: Full Sun | Soil: Clay I'm Organic!

We live at the bottom of a hill and the entire neighborhood drains into our back forty when it rains, so we have a bit of a drainage problem, which leads to a bit of a mosquito problem. Making matters even worse, our soil is some of the heaviest, poorest quality clay I have ever seen in this state.

This spring we buried a mountain of pruned branches in several hugelkultur beds in the area in an attempt to soak up some water that way. I also decided to start building up a bit of a rain garden with (mostly) deep-rooted native perennials, hoping to improve the soil’s drainage a bit.

It’s still quite small, only about 6×6 feet, but I planted a collection of some of my favorite native wildflowers, mulched it with straw leftover from mulching the vegetable garden, and dumped some Ox-Eye Daisy seeds in as well. We’ll see how it goes.

I also hope to make the garden a haven for butterflies, bees, and other pollinators, as well as birds.
