I first created this garden patch in 2006 using the Lasagna garden method for one bed and just digging other areas, incorporating a few big tubs, and some smaller pots. I learned a lot that year. Mainly that the raised beds created from a variety of mulches, peat and compost were the way to go for most of my plantings. With that in mind, I started over in 2007 by creating 4 beds about 3 ft. wide by 36 ft. long, running east to west, that nearly doubled my patch of garden. Newspaper laid over the sod, followed by numerous layers of peat moss, crushed leaves, grass clippings, and compost to a depth of about 8 inches and topped with a dusting of wood ash was the recipe. Wood mulch covered the newspaper between the rows for a good walking area. I learned more. My “perfect” location – lots of sun, close to the house and a water source, some protection from wind – was in the direct path of serious run-off when we would have a downpour. Good news was the raised beds held their own for the most part. Bad news was, every time we had a gully-washer, the wood mulch and a small portion of my beds ended up washing into the yard and even into the fields. Now it’s 2008 and time for some more solutions to the problems. I’ve sunk a long board along the end of the garden where the water enters for a diversion. In addition I want to build a berm of earth that will divert water around the garden. This year’s plan includes tomatoes, cucumbers, lettuce, spinach-mustard greens, garlic, soybeans (edamame), squash, chard, cauliflower, broccoli, various basils and marigolds. The REST will be planted in the new patch I plan to build just west of this garden!
