Hedge's Terrace garden

Garden Type: Container | Sun: Don't Know | Soil: Potting Mix I'm Organic!

I had one container last year. And I was so proud of myself. I have a small terrace. No grass. A couple of small beds and interlocking brick. I spent the early months of this year pouring over garden magazines, and decided that I want a jungle! How hard can it be? * cackle * I want it all and I want it cheap! Did I mention that I’m frugal? There’s cheap, cheaper, cheapest and then there’s me * wink *

I was visiting my favorite Auntie and planting bulbs in containers. I was stunned with how many pots she had. I found out that she would walk every day with a group of ladies, and the highlight of the week was recycle day! They would pull out the wagons and scour the neighborhood for plant pots! Now I find myself, on recycle day, checking out my neighborhood for things to plant in. You might say it’s become a family tradition! It’s in the genes.

I have 2 planters with …
Canna Lily: The President
Asparagus Fern: Helecho Esparrago
Dolce: Key Lime Pie
Caibrachoa Hybrid: Noa Red
Helichrysum: Licorice Plant
Ipomoea: Marguerite Sweet Potato Vine

I went to Rickter’s and picked up my favorites …
Margarita Mint
Apple Mint
Hillary’s Sweet Lemon Mint
Citrus Kitchen Mint
Lemon Thyme
Yerba Buena
Bacopa
Garden Sorrel (Rumex)

For a little Whimsey …
I started another large container. I used bamboo stakes and buried an old cracked planter with a Goose in the center, for a little whimsey. I put Cobaea – Scandens Blue inside the bamboo around the goose, then added Cosms – Polidor around the outside. I’m hoping the Cobaea, with huge blue cup/saucers, as a vine, will wrap around the bamboo and that the Cosmos will add fernlike foliage with strikingly bright flowers around the outside. The Whimsey will be Mother Goose peeking out of her greenery!

Another container …
Red Azalea
Sempervivum: red
Sempervivum: green
variegated english ivy

And for the first time …
I said I wanted a jungle patio, and these look amazing. Or at least according to the package. The Illustris elephant ear features black/purple leaves with white/green veins. I’m hoping it will do well. I’d show you a picture but right now it’s not doing anything. My elephant is still sleeping I’m afraid. Remember … never tickle sleeping elephants!

What about vegetables, you say … all in containers!
tomatoes
pickling cucumbers
leaf lettuce
runner beans
bush beans

Did You Know … if you plant radish seeds in each cucumber hill it will protect it against cucumber beetle? uh huh, yup!

Hey, great job with the containers. They look terrific. Good luck with them all. Containers are so much fun to design and create. And the best part is that at anytime you can take them apart and do them all over again in different ways. We’ve had so much rain here, nothing is really growing all that much yet. The sun will come out soon, I hope.

Nice photo, seems to invite you to come in! Your entrance is attractive, with the tree and the lantern hanging from the branches, and everything is very pleasant. Congratulations for your recycling efforts (I think I will copy some of your ideas) and good luck with your growing jungle!
