The deep depression of losing earth to concrete in the move from country to city has been filled with knowledge that some greens grow in Zone 7 that never would have in Zone 5. The constant reevaluation of pots, placement, and their occupants keeps the mind whirring even when all aphids have been squashed and pruning has been completed. And one must crow that weeding is an event of the past and some future garden elsewhere.
This part of the garden ranges up the southern street front of our row house. The majority occupy the large second floor deck, that is roofed by the third floor and a large planter rests on the ground floor. All receive good direct sunlight, however at high summer, the amount of light is restricted by the angle of the summer sun. Thus, the garden ends up receiving more consistent light in mid-August, September and through the winter than in May, June, or July.
