Beets getting old 3 Simplicity garden , Beet, Chiogga (Providence C3) Harvesting, Carrot, Touchon (long) (Providence A5) Harves...
I’ve been holding a few Chiogga beets in the ground until I wanted them — they picked up the same strong throat-burning bitter oxalic acid flavor that swiss chard gets as it matures — so I can’t eat them raw. Now I know. I’ll try cooking the last couple. This is my f...

Harvest - tomatos, beet, chrysanthemum 1 Simplicity garden , Tomato, Brandywine (Providence D6) Harvesting, Beet, Chiogga (Providence C3) Harvesting...
Tomato – big brandywine, several red figs, a chiogga beet. The first 2 edible chrysanthemums. I ate all the petals off one in the garden – they taste a little peppery and carroty (just like their greens) – and brought the other home to sprinkle on a sliced beet.

Harvest updates Simplicity garden , Tomato, Brandywine (Providence B6) Harvesting, Tomato, Brandywine (Providence D6) Harve...
Tomatoes, beans, calendula. The edible chrysanthemum is in bloom, one blossom at the top with several buds. First carrots out of the French baby carrot square — long and slender and pretty and delicate, but not actually very sweet, at least not raw. Tasty, but not sweet, which I was expecting.

I pulled up my first-ever potatoes tonight. I got two pounds from a square foot of French Fingerlings potatoes. That’s not counting the ones I snuck out from under a few at a time. I had company for dinner and cooked them all at once; they were great. I’ll make the leftovers into pota...

Calendula in bloom 1 1 Simplicity garden and Calendula Officianalis (Providence D2)
My calendula officianalis is officially in bloom. Any idea what I should do with the flowers? Besides take a pic? They are probably at about their peak — fully opened or almost. Should I pick and dry? Whole flowers or petals only? OK, I know it would take me about 2 minutes to find the ans...

I have the first two Brandywine tomatoes of the season today. Will edit this entry with weights and hopefully photos later. I’m exhausted; spent 5.5 hours on my feet working burgers today, and ran errands and gardened on the way home. A tall cold one is waiting in the frig and a spaghetti d...
