ves's Simplicity garden

Garden Type: Community | Sun: Full Sun | Soil: Loam I'm Organic!

This is a 20×40 foot community garden plot. It opened May 1 this year. I signed up for one of the year round spaces. Last year I made the mistake of trying to do too much with limited funds, and most of my plants suffered from lack of fertilizer and too many weeds.

This year I’m in a new section of garden. The soil was city-park style lawn two months ago.

I’m putting in raised beds, because the site gets water standing in lower sections in the winter. Again, funds are very limited, so I’m using recycled lumber from the Habitat for Humanity Restore, and other scavenged items.

As of June 1, I have one 4×4 and one 4×6 bed built and filled with purchased “topsoil” and I plan to build a couple more by winter, but I’m probably not buying topsoil again. Once I get all my seeds and plants in — Square Foot Garden style — I will hoe the rest of it and plant it in buckwheat, and put down cardboard and straw over all the paths. I’m thinking seriously of buying a couple of straw bales for winter gardening too.

And I will be trying wintersowing next spring (thanks, katxena!)

Yes, some sections are getting overcrowded. Next year I will ignore Mel’s spacings for cabbage and tomatoes. They need more room than 1 square foot each. I think 3 tomatoes across the back of a 4-square foot bed would be OK. And I think a cabbage needs at least 4 square feet when it is full-sized. My big cabbages are overlapping the other squares.

I need to update the things that didn’t come up.
