This was a landslide hazard zone that we stabilized with engineered retaining walls. 4 pictures (guess which!) are “before” .
In planting I divided the area into zones, intending each zone to have a season of interest. I think of the part shady area under the lilac as winter-spring, the more shady areas by the deodara as summer-late summer- fall, and the the sunnier areas near the steps and patio as spring-summer
