When we moved in the border around the front lawn was mostly a part shady summer perennial garden dominated by astilbe, japanese anemone, and monarda, looking best from July through October. It had a “secret garden” aspect, as it had gotten quite weedy and had ivy ground cover engulfing a lot of nice stuff. It was fun to clean it up and remove the ivy and discover all the evidence of previous enthusiastic gardeners. I have been adding shrubs, evergreens and site adapted plants to try and make it look good for a longer season, and to get a weed suppressing “matrix” going.
I weed more and water less than my predecessor. The monarda and astilbe have died out, and japanese anemone has spread, under my regime.
