Our garden this year is on my grandfather’s farm. He no longer farms it, but there is a nice big patch of dirt that tends to get used as a kitchen garden. This year, Chris and I are taking responsibility for it. We plan on sharing our harvest with the family.
We got the soil tested but didn’t add any amendments. My dad helped us plow, disc, and drag the field with a tractor, and after that it’s all hand work (Chris made the sweet potato mounds!)
Although we’re farther south than the Ithaca gardens, the USDA zone is the same and most of our knowledge will transfer. We’re planning on:
- repeating the things we do well: sweet potatoes, regular potatoes, winter squash, onions, and carrots
- trying again with the veggies that showed promise: tomatoes, zucchini, brussels sprouts, iguana greens
- attempting some new and exotic veggies: cauliflower, watermelon, canteloupe
