Long ago in what seems like a far, far away place, I was the proud owner of a Chicago loft with a beautiful garden on a rooftop deck. Time, my lack of gardening knowledge and neglect have taken it’s toll. My flower beds are now home to some indestructible weeds.
Readily influenced by the promotion of the green lifestyle and my love of cooking, I’ve decided to take on this formidable opponent and see if I’m capable of converting the soil into a fertile vegetable garden. I have visions of delicious fresh tomatoes, spinach, peppers, onions, herbs and spices.
This past weekend I took advantage of our first good weather to begin my project. The first task was taking on the weeds, and what a job it turned out to be. After several hours of back breaking work I managed to advance halfway around the perimeter of my deck. The soil has been completely permeated by whatever type of weeds these are. I’m such a neophyte that I don’t even know the name of what I’m fighting. I’m going to have to figure that out in order to insure that I’ve destroyed them and that they aren’t going to return. It’s time to consult an expert and see if I need to do something to the soil. I’m clueless. I’ve purchased a few books, but all they have managed to do is confuse me.
Wish me luck.

It will be tough I am sure but I am sure you will be able to handle it, your hard work already put in attests to your dedication. Another good good is “The Bountiful Container” not only is their advice excellent for those of us with limited space but also applies to roomier situations. Best of luck!!!
