This is my largest vegetable garden. I built it last year in sections. This year I plan on painting it with all the time I will save with a square foot garden.
This year I will grow asparagus, tomatoes, squash, peas, beans, cucumbers, cauliflower, broccoli, spices, flowers to keep some bugs away and to bring in some others. Lots of greens are planted here: spinach, lettuce, collard greens, Swiss chard, turnip and mescalin.
I will try my hand again with watermelon (not much luck last year, late start) all tho we don’t really have the extended weather for watermelon or cantaloupe, this year I feel good about it producing fruit and will plant both again.
I use organic soil for filling the containers. The soil is a mixture of organic mushroom compost, organic manure, organic compost, peat moss, vermiculite (or perlite). I buy different brands of each, then mix all items together and add it to the containers. Now I don’t have to do anything else to it except add plants, water it and add more compost to it each year. No more tilting or walking on the beds.
Enjoy.

Wow and looking at your space you should know. What a lovely site.
And thank you for visiting mine. You and I both know they will only get better. :) So please come back by and say hi again, I will do the same.

I like what you are doing! I too have the first large back yard and also a nice front yard in which to plant, and the landlord has been generous enough to allow us to do about whatever we want. His only stipulation is that it has to look nice. So we are pretty much in heaven here too. The only thing that I think would be better is if we could plant berry bushes, but that will come, if we decide to buy it!! So many people have to struggle with lack of space! We are very fortunate to have the problem of deciding when to quit planting, versus trying to decide what we can plant! :)

Being a landlord for the past 2 decades I know exactly what you are saying. I even tell my tenants verbally and in a letter to plant a garden in the back. They don’t, I’m glad you do.

Hey! That grid paper hole thing you use for planting is awesome! Mind if I borrow your idea? I never get my spacing exactly right. Most of the time I don’t care, but for radishes and carrots it makes a huge difference. Your boxes look so good. I can imagine that once they start producing you make the best salads and stirfries!
This is my first try as a SFG’r but I’m loving it already. I’m having far more success than I ever did with veggies in pots or with gardening in the ground. The rabbits can’t get into the boxes, the squirrels seem not to have noticed (or the animal repellant is working!) and I don’t have to deal with our heavy clay soil. It’s so easy too, once you get the box set up. I realized today, after replanting some squares, that there’s nothing much to do for a while but sit and watch the radishes.

I totally agree with everything you said @langenoire. You may use the grid, I stole it from Mel’s SFG I think.
