When we raised the ducklings, we built a frame of 1×10s with a plastic dropcloth lining it. That went inside a wire dog “crate”, and held the bedding and kept spills contained. (There were a lot. Ducklings splash, even if all they have is a chick waterer.)
I originally planned to use the frame – a little over 2×3 – as a high-rise box on top of a regular 4×4 SFG, but until I get enough frames built, I’m using this one on the ground. Since I’m doing potatoes this year, I filled it with modified Mel’s Mix… one part compost and one part vermiculite mixed, potatoes on top of that, covered with one part peat moss/coir.
As a bonus, I can use that crate as a conveniently-sized enclosure to hold the compost/mulch that will get stacked on top as the potatoes grow.
