Instead of being pure Mel’s Mix like the first three squares, this is a lasagna bed – effectively, my compost pile last summer. I did experiment with a small Three Sisters planting in it, and after the former-compost-pile potato patch was done next to it, I shoveled that Mel’s Mix in on top. It’s settled quite a bit, and when it’s filled all the way will eventually make a good deep carrot patch since it’s my tallest box. In the meantime, I plan to put in greens until the soil is mature enough for root crops.
Instead of a trellis, this bed has a cold frame, and provided lettuce and radishes all the way through Thanksgiving – and would have done all winter if I had a sturdier cover. I count that experiment a success, and plan to cover three beds next winter, probably using Coroplast instead of cheap drop-cloth plastic.
