I don’t “do” houseplants, but this winter I am doing them becuase I have plants I just can’t let die over the winter. I started this because I really wanted to keep the pink trailing coleus that I loved some much this spring and summer (and only saw for sale once) alive to enjoy next year. Then, there was the Boston Fern, the spider plant Bobbie gave me, the neat purple coleus and the kalanchoes that lived outside all until it got cold.
I don’t have that much indoor sun, no sun room or anything, and very narrow window sills. I am doing the best I can. The fern is in the living room when it is really cold, otherwise it is on the porch. The kalanchoe live on the dryer in the laundry room and everything else is on the stove in the kitchen. I need to get another cheap cutting board to use as a little plant shelf between the top of the oven and the windowsill.

I just love what you have called this garden, and you have my sympathies entirely :-) I am sure that I would do the same if I had the space in my house. Unfortunately, I often end up with a plant cemetry instead.
