TropicanaRoses's Veggie Garden garden
Garden Type: Square Foot | Sun: Full Sun | Soil: Sand | Established: 2009 | Organic ARCHIVED

Our garden is in zone 5, and we live within 1/2 mile of a small river. Our ground gets pretty saturated when it rains, and we like the idea of square foot gardening, so for those to reasons, we are going to try it this year. We are very excited about this. I have tomato, bell pepper, and three varieties of hot peppers, beets, and brussel sprout seedlings in our back room getting ready for planting. They will be ready in April, I think.
An outdoor organic garden located in United States, TropicanaRoses's Veggie Garden garden currently contains 8 plants.
This is a Square Foot garden that is known to be in USDA Hardiness Zone 5. It has mainly Sand soil and receives Full Sun light.Photos

hi Tropicana! sorry, i didn’t see your comment, i think i missed an alert. thanks so much for your suggestion of using vines to block the wind- i’m going to grow Morning Glory but it didn’t occur to me to actually put it to use, heh. i wish i had space for a big vegetable garden. good luck with yours!

Thanks, but remember, circumstances are constantly changing, so you may just get your wish someday!! :) I have been in worse situations for gardening. I have lived in basement apartments with no deck or outside places to plant.

Hey Tropicana! Looks like you have a lot of space out there for your veggie garden, similar to mine. I’m excited to see how you square foot gardening turns out. I have plenty of room on my land, but am thinking it may be a practical way to do things nonetheless. At least until I’ve been at it a few years and have a better idea of how I can interplant things in a more permaculture-focused way.
I’m in 5 too – northeastern Missouri. I started gardening in Virginia (zone 7!) and am also learning to scoot the boundaries of what I can and can’t grow. Sometimes exciting, sometimes an exercise in letting go.
Anyway, nice to meet you! And good luck with your seedlings :)

Thanks! I have good luck with most things so far. My area of near failure seems to be in the brassica department, but I have not given up yet. I am going to direct sow my broccoli and cauliflower to see whether I am just not cut out to grow it, or what. It seems that many other people are having difficulty with their broccoli as well, so I do not feel as bad as I did.

Thanks!! We got our first bit of snow over night, and it is still snowing, and the night before we had a hard freeze, so we are pretty much done for the year, but I am developing some cool ideas for next year is we are still here. More tomatoes, and central area in which to sit in the garden areas, and a fall/spring garden by the street for people to enjoy. (Most of our gardens are hidden by the hedge row and house so no one can really enjoy the flowers unless they come into our “inner sanctum”. :) Some of this depends on whether or not we buy the house.

Nice to meet you zindagi, and welcome to folia!! I hope that you enjoy our community as much as I have. :) I rather like our climate. The winters are relatively short here, and this year even shorter as we are having unseasonably warm temperatures. It is warm today!! Last year at this time, I think there was snow on the ground!!
