redloon's 2009 Veggie, Fruit, Herb & Flower garden

2009 will be my second year “renting” this plot, which is part of a community garden owned and managed by the South End Lower Roxbury Open Space Land Trust. It’s a lot of fun gardening while surrounded by other gardens and gardeners!

My plot’s dimensions are about 10ft x 20ft, including a small patch of red raspberries which I cut back last fall. There is a large deciduous tree nearby, but it only shades my plot for a few hours each day. The soil quality is pretty poor (it’s shallow, heavy, and has quite a bit of gravel mixed in), so I’m planning to add a lot of compost this spring. I made it off the wait-list for a plot in late April last year, and I was happy that I was able to get an earlier start this year!

    Is your land mostly forested, or fields? What are your long-term plans for it?
