turkeytaker's Porch-side garden

Garden Type: Backyard | Sun: Full Sun | Soil: Clay

This bed gets absolutely roasting sun, especially in the summer. It’s a southern exposure and I’ve struggled finding plants that can handle it. It’s bordered with hypertufa rocks and mulched with bradford pear chips.

    Hi!
I lived and gardened in Columbia, SC for 10 years before moving up north.
That growing in the full summer sun can be a pain in the patootie. One of the plants that I found that did extremely well was Lantana. It can be perennial at zone 7, if properly mulched in the winter, and we had one plant that was 6 years old. It was slow to come up in the spring, but once it did, it bloomed from then until frost. It was nearly 4 feet across!
Two more that did well were orange butterfly weed and gloriosa daisies. I was also fairly successful with daylilies. For all of those, I did virtually no watering, but they did fine.

I have seeds for the butterflyweed and gloriosa daisies. let me know if you want any.

I’ve got a small lantana that I hope will come back in that area, so it’s good to hear I’m on the right track. I’ve got a butterfly bush that’s going to go in there, but I don’t know how it compares to the weed. I’ve got lots of the daisies started already, so now I have an idea of where to put them!

Thanks for the offer. I’ll check out the butterfly weed and see about that.

the picture of my back-hedge garden is of the butterflyweed and the gloriosa daisy, including a couple of the interesting seed pods butterflyweed has.

I know it is very drought resistant, because during one drought year, it was the only thing blooming for about two weeks.

The butterflyweed is much shorter than the butterfly bush, and tends to oranges rather than purples.
