Shade is a necessity in our hot climate. New seeds are sown under 70% shadecloth. As the seedlings develop they are move to areas with 50% shade to harden off.
In summer they don’t need full sun hardening off as most of the garden is covered in white 50% shadecloth.
The older shadehouses in photos 4 & 5 are built of wood and reclaimed aluminium. They are both covered with 70% shadecloth and are useful sheltered areas for potting up too.
These two shadehouses were fitted with sprinkler systems but our current water restriction prohibit their use now so all planting is watered by hand.
The arched structure was built to cover the benches when an old tree blew down in a storm. See more of our arched structures here.
This link shows how we attach the shadecloth.
A new bench was added this year (made from an old trampoline frame) to hold the boxes for growing Trees For Life. This was covered with shadecloth fitted onto another old trampoline frame that sits on top of the bench! See here
