littlefarmerhill's Grandpa Les's Old Corn Patch garden

This is the piece of the 3.5 acres that my Grandpa Les used to grow most of his corn on. I have fond memories of running through it and playing hide and go seek in it…the fine hairs on the leaves catching my own hair and clothes as I ran past.

Not sure how large this measures. My brother and I measured it in January 09 and he wrote the numbers down somewhere, but now I don’t recall what they were. I’m pretty sure it’s about a 1/4 acre, though. It butts up against a somewhat busy highway so I’d definitely like to get a hedge of some sort going on that end of things to keep out not only noise but gross exhaust fumes. It’s framed on either side by various fruit trees that my Grandpa also planted…all dwarf Apple, Pear and Plum.

Last year – 2008 – was the first year I got serious about planting vegetables in this garden (I only moved to this property in January of 08) and was able to raise quite a bit. All from seed. Which made me feel very proud. I also used no tractors or rototillers – just a 4 × 8 chicken tractor and a spading fork. And this year I want to go bigger and better.

I get pretty frustrated by how often I find cat and dog poop in this particular garden, especially since this is where I grow food. I have plans to remedy this situation…the PoultryNet electric fencing I just got in the mail will probably help quite a bit.
