graibeard's Northern garden

Garden Type: Vegetable | Sun: Partial Sun | Soil: Sand I'm Organic!

For years this was part of the chook run, it’s also the spot where I buried all the runner grass (Kikuyu etc.) at a depth of 0.5 to 1.5 metres, there was a lot of it! This was then topped with bark and sweepings from the wood heap. There’s been no sign of the runner grass and it’s had several magnificent crops of Potatoes from it.

It’s directly to the east of the paved (patio) area where the grapes will hopefully become established.

This is the northern most of the six main beds in the backyard and for rotation purposes can be counted as one. North of this is the final home of the compost heap. as identified by the wooden wall in the photo.

Generic description of the backyard beds:
The soil is sandy loam which is a pleasure to work and weed but a devil to keep from blowing away and stop from drying out. It’s always hungry for organic matter and if left to its own will grow the best stinging nettles this side of the black stump, followed closely by asthma weed.

All these backyard beds are surrounded by concrete pavers and border stones which are laid upon either, 30 year old paths, or the existing sand that has been lightly compacted (body weight only). If they move too much we’ll re-lay them. We originally wood chipped the paths and raked the edge of the beds, or lined them with wooden planks. These methods proved less than satisfactory in managing, keeping the sand from finding its way into the living area, or just blowing away into the neighbours (all that fine added goodness, never the raw sand!). This time around we went for broke and paved them all, this allows the mulch to be put where its most needed and the paths managed much easier – easily cleaned, easily moved.

This will be the third year on this sort of scale, previously I never had the space so it was the occasional sowing.
I have had a few failures amongst them, the garden is still suffering through its settling in period since the major revamp so the balance between predators and bugs is still askew. I’ve no real complaints though, we’ve still got enough to carry us through.
I had a bad case of aphids on the garlic last year. This year the red spider mite is being a pain, still, I can stand to lose a few percent and still offend the visitors ;-).
