Geophytes are my favorite plant form — any bulb, rhizome, tuber that will grow in my climate.
Butterflies are my favorite visitors. I plant nectar plants, attempting to have something blooming that butterflies find attractive throughout the year. Winter is a real challenge. In December, warm days bring out occasional Gulf Frits, Cloudless Sulphurs, Dogface Butterflies and tiny checkspots and skippers which seek out lantana montevidensis under shelter of live oaks and pines, or find their way through the open greenhouse doors.
Bulbs are not commonly thought of as butterfly plants, but butterflies frequently nectar on hyacinths, lilies, and crocosmia, to name a few.
