This is the lowest spot in the yard and is the northwest corner of the backyard. When it rains, depending on the amount, it can become anything from a bit-squishy to ready-for-an-ark. Our property was originally a swamp that they clay-capped and covered with a couple of feet of top soil. Needless to say, it doesn’t drain well. Lawn grass doesn’t even do well here. About all that will grow are some volunteer wild grasses and weedy wildflowers.
This past spring, 2008, we decided to try to experiment to see if we could fix up this area at all. Paul had some dirt delivered to try to fill in the lowest spots. That did help some, but there are still some depressions that need more dirt. We also decided to try planting some bushes that might like water and would draw in some of the excess. Paul kind of adopted this area as his personal garden project – he did the research on what plants might work here. It was definitely trial and error… some things lived and many did not! Those that didn’t work included Hosta, Korean Fir, Butterfly Bush, Abelia. It is a continuing challenge!
But it’s not all gloom and doom! Paul “planted” a double shepherd’s hook that was hung with a flowering pot and a thistle feeder. By mid summer we must have had a colony in the back trees of at least 50 goldfinches. They feasted all summer long and we could spend hours just sitting on the deck and watching their antics.
An outdoor organic garden located in Swansea, MA, United States, SneIrish's Boggy Backyard Corner garden currently contains 19 plants.
This is a Bog garden that is known to be in USDA Hardiness Zone 6b. It has mainly Peat soil and receives Full Sun light.Photos
