I live on a farm.My garden is made up of 2 plots. My vegetable plot is the size of a small, city lot. ( It feeds 2 fanilies and numerous relatives and friends) I plant all the main vegetables canning and freezing most of it. I like to try 1 new plant a year. I may intersperse some flowers in my rows.
My flower plot is separated from the vegatable garden by a wide grass path. This plot is about a quarter of the size of the veggie patch. This plot is a work in progress, due to a time and financial factor. I am planting alot of perennials, but I also plant annuals as well. It is a challenge to find plants for zone 2a and ones that bloom at different times of our growing season.
The whole area is open to the full sun, having trees on the north and east side, but at a distance. It can get dry in summer, but our snow in winter , when it melts, give a good start for moisture.
My prize plants in the flower patch are the Eremurus or Foxtail Lily, a Zone 4 plant. I have to say though that it is the high pile of snow that gets blown on it from our lane that helps it survive year after year.
