This will be my 4th year for winter sowing, one of the most rewarding aspects of gardening for me. It’s easy, requires little maintenance and the plants grow amazingly healthy. Last year was my biggest year, with 150 containers and almost all germinating. Unfortunately, having a job interferes with my gardening so I have vowed to keep it manageable this year, my goal being no more than 100. Not very likely since I have never been able to pass up an interesting seed and my stash is already at 84 packs.
That’s my dog helping with the winter sowing by collecting the milk jugs my neighbor saves for me and then throws over the fence. I have the best neighbors.
Thanks to this awesome site I can now track my containers from start to finish, including planting out. I’ll start with the perennials in January and work my way to the annuals, hopefully finishing up the sowing in April.

My favorites last year were Nicotiana Sensation Mix, it didn’t mind the drought and bloomed all summer, and Tithonia Goldfinger, bloomed from August through October and the butterflies loved it.

I’ve just direct sowed or transplanted. But this sounds interesting. I’ve googled and checked out WS groups. I think I can do this. I have 5 stackable plastic crates that I got cheap from a greenhouse lily grower. It’s what his bulbs arrived in. I have a bag of soil laying flat in one now with leaf lettuce growing directly in the bag. I think they would do perfect. I can stack ’em or lay them out! Thanks Everyone!
