Moving into this house in November meant it was far beyond planting anything in the garden. My father and my grandmother are both known for their gardens and I imagine it was a little disappointing that I never cared one way or another about gardening until the last five years. I remember years ago following my dad around his backyard with my eyes glazing over as he explained in minute detail every plant, seedling, tree, and bush on his large lot. I just could not understand the fascination. Now it is one of our strongest bonds.
So, on a cold November day before I’d even unpacked anything in the house, my dad and I went to a local nursery where he bought me a jumbo pack of hot pink tulip bulbs and asked where I wanted them planted in my new yard. I pointed to the middle of the lawn in the backyard. He didn’t even question my decision, he just dug up a patch of grass and planted them. That was the beginning of my circle bed. It is now 15’ around, not an exact circle, more like two ovals with a path for dog in the middle.
