When we moved here in 1987, there was a stand of three small Rhododendron bushes planted together in the north side of the front yard. There were some Hosta and Hyacinths planted under the bushes, and we really did not do anything special with them. By 2006, the Rhododendrons had gotten so large that they blocked any sun from the plants under them. Paul decided to prune out the bottom of the bushes where there were lots of dead branches. Once this was done, I decided to plant a couple of things under them so it didn’t look so bare.

The planting continued, and the little Rhodie Garden did well…

For Mother’s Day 2008, Paul bought me a Harry Lauder Walking Stick. I wanted to plant it in a place where I could see it from the house, and Paul suggested planting it near the Rhododendrons and then clearing out the space in between for a nice garden. He didn’t need to twist my arm… it was done!

Harry had done quite nicely! And there are now shade plants under the Rhodie and some nice new sun plants near Harry. It makes a nice complement for the front yard. I have added some things that match the wierdness of Harry… little stone Gargoyles keep watch around the garden, Voodoo Lily bulbs planted in the fall of 2008.

An outdoor organic garden located in Swansea, MA, United States, SneIrish's Rhodie garden currently contains 40 plants.

This is a Frontyard garden that is known to be in USDA Hardiness Zone 6b. It has mainly Combination soil and receives Partial Sun light.

    Dear Sue,
The Plants for Members of the ARS is holding their rooted cutting sale Saturday at Plane View Nursery in Portsmouth, R.I. The sale is open to the public after 12 noon. I have to be in Maine on Saturday; otherwise I would be there to greet you if you wanted to go. The cuttings are $3 a piece – a real bargain. My husband jokes that while I do not play the lottery, I gamble with rhodo cuttings each year. Anyway , if you are interested in going I can send you directions to Plane View. I will be purchasing cuttings at their next regular meeting when I am in town. They usually hold P4M meetings on the 4th Saturday of each month.
I hope your garden is doing well. We are just finishing the job of removing a 40 year old juniper hedge – I started on this last autumn. I will put in about ten large to medium rhodos and then a perennial bed. My seedlings have come along nicely. I was very impressed by the propagation method I gleaned from your .blog – using plastic coffee cans with plastic membrane lids. Was it called RW or RS method? Anyway, I got Aconitum to germinate; I have tried to grow Aconitum 3 or 4 times before but could never get germination. I take sewing classes at Apple Annie’s and one of the women in the class is a Master Gardener from Barrington. She was very interested when I described the method. Thanks so much, Jacki
