SneIrish's Heritage garden

Garden Type: Cottage | Sun: Full Sun | Soil: Combination I'm Organic!

This garden is from the side of our garage at the driveway to the edge of the road. It was originally only to be a cottage garden, and I started to prepare part of it in the fall of 2007 with “lasagna” style layering, about a six foot wide strip coming out from the garage. Then, for my birthday this year (2008) my husband bought me six rose bushes with the names ‘Celtic Pride’, ‘Irish Hope’, ‘English Miss’, ‘Pride of England’. ‘Remember Me’ and ’Rainbow’s End’. After a bit of consideration, I decided that these would make a beautiful border for the garden and the “Heritage Garden” was created. Although there are several other types of plants already there, the on-going goal now is to grow plants that follow the Heritage theme – Irish, Scottish, English and Welsh – either by native growth area or by name. In August 2008, I finished layering the rest of the garden area to the street. A brick border was placed around the perimeter, and a small wrought iron gate was erected at the street side as a focal point entrance. In October, I used stones dug up from the yard while planting and made a cobbled entrance way in front of the gare, and then planted some small plugs of Irish Moss between the stones. In the spring, after the cardboard layering has composted, I will make a path through the area with the stones and moss also. This is a bigger planned project than I have undertaken before, but so far I am quite pleased with the way it looks and is progressing.
