rainymountain's Shade garden

Garden Type: Flower | Sun: Dappled Sun | Soil: Combination I'm Organic!

The Shade Garden runs east-west roughly, from the Drive Garden which is contiguous and at right angles. At the west end it is bordered by the path from the parking area which is the main path to the house. The garden is 17’ long and originally 4’ deep. However a triangular shaped piece was added with its widest end, 3’, at the west end of the bed sloping to join the main bed at 11’ east and a narrow path divides the two. There is a trellis, and arbour along the fence which continues over the path to form an arch. A pebble path leads into the main garden and divides this bed from the Porch and Bow Window Gardens. The dry stream drain-away for rain water from the house roof runs across the path to empty into the bed east of the 4’ mark.

This garden is shaded at the west by a very large maple whose branches now reach almost to the edge of the garden. This provides very dense shade once the leaves are out, and sucks a lot of water from the garden. Climbing roses and clematises grow up the trellis and arbour, hopefully screening the cars from view but also further shading the garden. As a result this is predominantly a shade garden, with good sunlight in the spring for spring ephemerals before the maple and climbers have leafed out. The path edge gets more sun than against the fence. The parked cars actually protect this garden from a couple of hours of hot late morning sun on the fence.

This garden was trenched to three feet, sand pebbles and rocks removed, and soil imported to make a slightly raised bed. This garden is mulched with manure and compost at least annually in order to retain moisture and to provide a woodland environment.
