The gravel garden is on the western side of the house and gets a lot of sun for most of the day. It was made in 2000/2001, when the original garden (all concrete slabs, mangy lawn and too tall conifers) was completely cleared. A permeable membrane was put over the soil, and a fairly thick layer of gravel was placed on this. Plantings have been done through the membrane. The garden has proved to be pretty easily maintained.
Raised beds were built at some of the boundaries of the garden.
The plants have been chosen to attract insects, birds and other wildlife – and several are used in the kitchen. All are easy to look after and rarely need watering.
