The Container garden consists of a number of containers some of which are ‘permanent’ plantings and some are annual, including this summer tomatoes, eggplants, courgettes, potatoes and runner beans. The permanent plantings include tender perennials such as pelagoniums, agapanthus, crinum and canna. The three latter overwinter in the basement (warmish) where they die back. I water them occasionally to prevent them drying out completely and bring them upstairs into the light in March so that they are growing well by the time they go outside. The pelagoniums join the winter garden upstairs and go into bigger pots in the summer joined by annuals. Other containers which contain a mix of annuals and perennials are murielie and begonias, whose bulbs/corms I save overwinter in paper bags in the basement. These also get started in early Spring.
A camellia in a pot with a Silver Variegated English Holly and Clematis cartmanaii ‘Joe’ also comes indoors over winter.
Remaining outside over winter are planters of tulips or other spring bulbs, a clematis and two evergreens. They are put in bags of leaves for insulation and other leaf bags are put around or on top except for the Juniper ‘Moonglow’ which has a Needlepoint Ivy in its pot and sits on the porch beside the door with its pot wrapt in bubble wrap. The sides of the porch give it additional shelter.
