rainymountain's 8. Road garden

Garden Type: Flower | Sun: Full Sun | Soil: Don't Know I'm Organic!

Road garden runs East to West roughtly, the fence divides it from Beyond the Pale Garden and a wide road allowance which slopes slightly south and is sandy. Road garden is 24’ long x 3’ deep. At the east end is a huge spruce tree which shades 6ft of the bed, depriving that area of deep snow cover in the winter and rain in the summer. The west end of Road Garden ends at the parking area fence and is contiguous with Drive Garden which runs at right angles to it.
This is another trench dug garden, which was stream bed at the west end but had some soil mostly around rotted tree trunks. About 10 years ago there was a large old maple growing midway down this garden. Imported soil filled most of the trench.

This is a very sunny garden getting sun from early morning to early afternoon and a burst in late afternoon at mid-summer. The fence provides shade, good for plants that like their roots in the shade.
This garden gets manure and compost annually, and an involuntary mulch of spruce needles and debris.
