The front beds are devoted to bulbs (daffodil, tulip, a few hyacinths, day lilies, saffron crocus and a few tiny native irises) hardy perennials (salvias, lavender, acanthus, clematis, crocosmia), an aging daphne odora and a lone spikey acanthus, plus a glorious antique wisteria that climbs the front of the house, a peppermint-striped camellia and some very scraggly rhododendrons on the west side of the house, where it’s really too hot for them. They’re messy, and often neglected, but still manage to produce handsome blooms nine months of the year.
