I grow only stiff neck varieties as I don’t like the ‘artichoke’ configuration of cloves on soft neck garlic heads.

For over 15 years I’ve been able to use my crop to reseed the next years bed, have enough for all my culinary needs and supply friends with ‘gifts’.

However, when I harvested my 200 (give or take) heads of garlic in August of 2010 I realized (unfortunately, too late) that I had made a mistake that, though I didn’t know it at the time, caused me to not have enough garlic to both replant and have enough to eat until I could harvest again. I will never make this mistake again. Here’s what happened: I had been growing garlic for over 10 years. Each year, when it came time for me to select from my harvest, those heads of garlic that I would be using to seed my next year’s crop, I opted to select those heads that had the largest cloves without giving any consideration to the number of cloves on each head. Over the years, I was getting heads of garlic with very large cloves but instead of 5-7 cloves per head, I was getting 3-5 cloves per head. No matter how large the cloves on my 200 (+-) head were, it was not going to make up for the fewer cloves that each head was producing.

So, now I am careful to initiate balance when selecting garlic seed for my future crop.
