We have a front garden which slopes down towards the house quite steeply and is terraced with wooden palings. It has a privet hedge at the top dividing it from the road; a fence on the left and the path down to the house on the right. We have a small top lawn with a woodland bed to its left then this area that we call the “front bed” before another lawn drops down to the herb bed near the kitchen window.
We spent the last few days (June 25 to 27 2012) digging out the old front patch and re-making the front bed. Digging it out was difficult as over time it had accumulated many aquilegias, Siberian poppies, sedums, violets, dandelions, buttercups and crouch grass! In the middle was a flourishing group of red peonies that we want to keep and on the left an ornamental grass – “striped gardener’s garters” which again we wanted to keep but needed drastically cutting back and digging up to make a much smaller patch.
As you can see from the first photo we dug all this up and then dug in four grow bags to improve the soil which is very clayey. We intend this bed to be a small herbaceous border and as you can see from the second photo have left the peony and the grass and begun to plant up with plants transplanted from elsewhere in the garden or grown from seed.
