Garden Type: Backyard | Sun: Full Sun | Soil: Chalk

The garden is situated atop a chalk hill about 150 foot above sea level, one mile from the coast. In places there is less the one foot of soil over the solid chalk. The soil is thin, poor, and dry and overpopulated with snails (Hostas once planted are never seen again!). On the plus side the winter of 2007/2008 recorded just two or three nights when then temperature dropped almost one degree below zero.

The heavy snow fall of several inches on 6th April 2008 (the first for several years) was all but gone by the next day.
