Tonya's Water bowl garden

Garden Type: Water | Sun: Full Sun | Soil: None I'm Organic!

I currently have 3 water bowls in the garden. 2 small bowls are 600mm diameter x 300mm depth (240 ltrs capacity). The large bowl is 700mm diameter x 600mm depth (290 ltrs capacity). Only the large bowl currently has fish in it. I eventually would like to plant lotuses in the large bowl, but in the meantime it has a couple of hardy red waterlilies, and some blue flag iris. The two small bowls both have yellow flag iris in them, and one also has 3 x japanese water irises. Eventually, I would like to put grow some water chestnuts.
The large bowl usually has a small solar water fountain.

I’d love to know more about water chestnuts…can you grow them from seed and what kinds of conditions / length of growing season do they need? Wish I could enjoy your growing season!

I love this garden!! I was curious about the little fountain or sprinkler (?) that you have in the bowl. Is that strictly for adding water, or is it some type of circulation/water filteration system, and was it expensive? I am trying to get a handle on how much it would cost of me to do something similar. I have even considered trying to find a double fountain and plant water plants in it. My daughter and I love the fish too. Are they coy fish? I bet they decimate the mosqito larva population.

The little fountain is a solar fountain, as I didn’t want to bother with an electric pump. I find it works really well. I initially put it in too allow for some water circulation to cut down on mosquito larvae and help prevent algae build up while the ecosystem in the water bowl was settling in.

In Australia you can buy solar fountains in a few different sizes. I have moved it out of the water bowl now, as i have waterlilies in there, and they like still water, and won’t flower if the water is moving. I have to clean it out and put in one of the other water bowls. I would definitly recommend the solar fountains, but you need to keep in mind that they usually on ly last a few years before you need to replace them.

Koi fish get fairly large and need a much bigger pond, so the fish are goldfish — comets which can withstand the cold better than other goldfish, and they control the mosquitoes.
