I started off with a mini-greenhouse, the type with a metal frame and a plastic cover. It was jam-packed with seed trays in the spring and I soon out-grew it. Later in the year I used it as a tomato house. Although this was good while it lasted, the weather made the plastic perish and split, so I invested in a greenhouse, which I’ve always wanted :)

I went for a polycarbonate one as opposed to glass because they are cheaper and smash-resistant. They also have the advantage over glass in the summer because the corrugated twin-wall reflects light at all angles, reducing the burn of the sun and helping crops to ripen all over, rather than just the side facing the sun. In winter not much light seems to get in and a large amount of condensation collects on the inside of the roof.

In the winter I won’t be heating it. I’ll sow seeds and if they germinate and grow, great, but if not it’s just tough! I’ll be heating it from feb/march onwards so that the tender seedlings that are usually taking over the house can be in the greenhouse getting more light and not getting in the way. For the heater we will need to put in electricity, but we worked out this would be far more cost efficient than using liquid fuels. It also means it will be on a thermostat which will automatically kick in to prevent frost, which will extend the growing season by 3 or 4 months.
