sassafrass's Sassafrass' Front Yard garden

Garden Type: Frontyard | Sun: Full Sun | Soil: Combination

I wanted something different in this neighborhood of square lawns, so, after removing the weedy trees (and weeds!), we extended the flower garden that grew straight across the front of the house down along the side toward the sidewalk in something of an “S” shape.
Already there was a scabiosa “butterly blue” and another plant which I haven’t been able to identify yet.

Last year I transplanted 4 clematis plants. the 2 blue ones didn’t make it. The other 2 are on either end of the front porch. I also transplanted 4 common sage bushes across the front; one was moved closer to the sidewalk. This year I dried A LOT of sage. I learned that the bushes are only good for culinary use for 4 years, so in a couple more years I have to decide whether to continue the sage (which grows like a weed!) or to transition to flowers. Also last year I transplanted (store-bought) chives, and a friend gave me some Greek oregano. The chives are at the far end of the porch in front of one clematis, which is growing quite nicely, and the oregano is in front of the chives.

This year I added campanula carpatica (I think – I’ll have to check), and sapphire trailing lobelia and white alyssium as a border. In the wide part of the “S” near the sidewalk, I planted variegated feather reed grass (calamagrostis). I’m not sure that I’ll leave that there; I have Easter lilies that need to go somewhere. And almost in the middle in front of the porch, the most recent addition is a small Kordana Rose (the centerpiece from a bridal shower).
