This was a pond project planned for this summer (2008) (at the request of the kids)that has sort of evolved without any of the big expensive outlay I thought it would need.
The ‘pond’ was an old, green Curver square plastic storage box found in the garage, previously used for lugging about hard core and flints picked out of the garden. The ‘water lily’ pond plant was bought from one of the kid’s school summer fetes and came with some handy duck weed hidden it. The stones are left over bits from the pergola coping. Water courtesy of the wet summer so far and occasional top-up from over-zealous kids and watering cans! We’ve added some oxegenating weed purchased for a pocket money sized 85p and found a small newt in with the weed for free… (A little worried about what to do with it once winter arrives in case the plastic cracks but sort that out nearer the time!)

What a fabulous idea! I always admire water gardens, but think that it would be difficult (and large) for our little garden. Thanks so much for the inspiration!

Just caught up with this posting – lovely idea. Is it sunk into the ground or free standing and does it have any soil added at all, I notice it says “Soil: None” but is that so???

Mimosamargot – you’ve noticed something I haven’t! – the ‘soil:None’ it must be in the garden set-up bit, I’ll have to try and edit it. The plant in the pond is in a pot with some soil/mud/compost? in it – I don’t know what sort as the plant came from a school fete already in the pot and we just put it in the plastic box. It is free-standing and with the first frost arriving today – I’m having a bit of a panic about keeping it going through the winter!

I must have a go – but perhaps I’ll wait until after winter! Good luck with keeping it going.
