damenora's Frontyard garden
Garden Type: Frontyard | Sun: Partial Sun | Soil: Combination | Established: 2008 | Organic
- 6
- 1
“Combination soil” and “partial sun” don’t even begin to cover this.
Half the yard gets sufficient sun to grow roses and crepe myrtles, but not quite enough to convince the waterlilies to bloom.
Half the yard gets dappled shade and grows hellebores.
The topsoil is sandy. Dig down a foot or so and there’s clay.
Located in Annapolis, Maryland, United States, damenora's Frontyard garden is an outdoor organic garden that currently contains 89 plants.
This is a Frontyard garden that is known to be in USDA Hardiness Zone 7b. It has mainly Combination soil and receives Partial Sun light.Plantings

hi there—glad to see someone trying to grow blackcurrants in the USA other than in the northwest. have you gotten any fruit from them? how do they handle the heat in MD? mine are in their second spring, and i’m disappointed that it doesn’t look like there will be any fruit this year. . .

Hi! This is only my blackcurrants’ second spring, so I don’t have vast experience. They handled the heat last summer pretty well though they did drop some leaves. I suspect the drought was a bigger problem than the heat. No sign of fruit this year, but as I said, only the second spring.

sounds like we’re having pretty similar experiences, although i don’t think my two plants lost any leaves. no drought here since i planted (unusually wet, actually), and last summer wasn’t as hot as usual—so this summer may be the real test.
hopefully we’ll both get berries next spring!

hi again—my blackcurrants seem to be actually going through with berries this year! not many, but some. they’re green as of yet, but i have high hopes. . . i hope yours are doing well.

Hiya,
Mine have also bloomed and are setting fruit. I’m very excited! Glad to hear yours are doing well too.

i just realized that folia doesn’t notify you if someone comments on your comment on someone else’s garden (if that makes sense)—so here’s what i wrote in response to your comment on my garden:
a cup of berries sounds great!
mine are still ripening, but i’m on track for probably about a half a cup. one bush produced hardly anything, and i didn’t put any netting on it, so the birds pecked off most of them. the other one did far better, and since i did put netting on that, i’ve gotten a fair amount from it.
more next year, i should think!
