“Combination soil” and “partial sun” don’t even begin to cover this.
Half the yard gets sufficient sun to grow roses and crepe myrtles, but not quite enough to convince the waterlilies to bloom.
Half the yard gets dappled shade and grows hellebores.
The topsoil is sandy. Dig down a foot or so and there’s clay.

sounds like we’re having pretty similar experiences, although i don’t think my two plants lost any leaves. no drought here since i planted (unusually wet, actually), and last summer wasn’t as hot as usual—so this summer may be the real test.
hopefully we’ll both get berries next spring!
